2014-07-14
At least 15 Zimbabwean cities and towns are set to benefit from a US$2-million government programme to install solar street lights, APA learnt here Saturday.Theprogramme would see the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority and local authorities in the capital Harare and other cities and towns replacing conventional street lighting with solar lights.
According to ZESA, the targeted cities and towns are expected to have solar street lighting by the end of August.
The programme comes at a time most urban areas in Zimbabwe no longer have street lighting due to a combination of vandalism and poor maintenance.
The lack of street lighting has led to an increase in cases of muggings and murders in unlit areas.
